To a layperson, all welding processes look the same because all procedures have smoke and sparks flying around. However, for technically well versed people, welding is a diverse umbrella term that uses a wide range of materials and equipment.
One of the most popular distinction welding processes in welding is based on the principle used in welding. According to this distinction, welding processes are divided into two categories.
The first category includes Fusion based processes. In these processes, a small surface of the work pieces are melted using several techniques. Once a pool of molten metal is created, the work pieces are joined. A welded joint is achieved when the pool cools down and solidifies.
The second category includes Solid Phase Processes. In these processes, the work pieces are heated to bring the temperature up to a point less than the melting point. Once the pieces are hot enough, they are pressed together for achieving a joint.
Of these two processes, the fusion processes are more popular because they require lesser skills and technique. This means that an average worker is able to accomplish workable welded joints without many errors. Since errors add to the cost of the project, many managers prefer fusion process welding to all other options.
The most popular fusion welding technique is arc welding that produces the spectacular display of sparks. This is also considered a cost effective welding process because o the low costs of generation of electricity.
The process of arc welding is also very simple. In fact, it is so simple that it is often automated through the use of robotics arms. This is the most common way of arc welding automobile parts with little or no issue.
Arc welding has become popular because the technique is considered feasible for all skill sets.
